“Sure,” I mentally kicked myself. He handed me
one of his death-sticks which I cautiously put in my mouth.
“I’m Rosen by the way.” He said with a smug smile on his face, which made him
just that little bit more adorable. Gah cute strangers offering me cigarettes,
Robyn Clarke, what are you doing? Rosen drew out a lighter as I replied
“Robyn,”
He lit mine up, and handed the lighter to me.
“Light me up, baby.” He near enough ordered me. I obediently lit his cigarette,
and took a puff out of mine. It tasted awful, absolutely disgusting. I nearly
choked on the intensity of the smoke.
“You a first-timer?”Rosen gave me a sarcastic glare.
I looked at the ground with a shy grin on my face and said “Yes,”
“Awee, you get used to it.”
“So, Rosen, shouldn’t you be in school?”
“I was going to ask you the same question, but since you asked so nicely, nope,
I dropped out about 2 years ago.”
“Wait, whoa, how old are you? 18?”
He gave me a slow, mocking, clap. “Well done, detective Robyn.” I politely
laughed at his lame joke. He turned to face me, staring right into my eyes. “So
why aren’t you in school, Robyn?”
I rolled my eyes, “Because I’m public enemy number one.” We both laughed, and
talked for what seemed like hours. Rosen, even though we had just met, was by
far my favourite person in the whole of Foxford.
I forgot all about my plan to sneak back into school, it wasn’t really worth it
if Harlow and Megan were just going to constantly harass me, plus Rosen’s so
much more interesting than listening to Mr Dean go on about rock formations.
The afternoon sun beating heavily down on us, we decided to part ways, but to
meet again sometime.
“Here’s my number, you know, if you want to call me anytime, I’m always free
since you know, no school on the agenda.” Rosen waved a piece of paper in front
of me. I snatched it from him, and put it in my pocket, drew out a pen, grabbed
his hand and scrawled mine on it.
“Nice to meet you, Ms Clarke,” Rosen bowed like a gentleman, I laughed at him.
He began to limp away. Maybe it was just a cramp or something from sitting down
for so long, but then I noticed the dried blood stains underneath his left
buttock.
“Hey, Rosen, what’s that on your left, uh side of your butt?” I asked him as he
leant on a bus stop sign.
“It’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” His bus stopped directly in front of us.
“This is kind of my bus, so see you. I’ll call you.” He waved, but I followed
him onto the bus.
“I’m not getting off until you tell me what’s wrong.”
Rosen opened his mouth to speak, but the driver cut him off, addressing me.
“Hey, little lady,” He pointed at me, and then gestured for me to come over. My
heart sank as I remembered I’d spent all of my money.
“Y-yes?” I said in a shaky voice.
“To ride the bus, you need to pay, so please be a sweetheart and pay the fare?”
“Oh, um, I’m really sorry, I don’t have any money left. I only came on to talk
to Rosen.”
“Rosen? That’s Blake Seares, He’s a nobody, or at least someone you don’t want
to get involved with. What on Earth would you want from him?”
So many questions raced through my mind, why did he lie about his name to me?
What made him a nobody, and why didn’t I want to get involved with him? My
silence became a cause for concern, as the driver began to look very impatient.
“How about I let you sit with Rosen/Blake, just this once for free, and you pay
me back another time?”
I grinned, “Thank you so much!”
He muttered something, but I didn’t quite catch it. I hurried to the back of
the bus where whatever-his-name-was was sitting. I heard him sigh when I
appeared in front of him.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily,” I paused. “Blake.”
His eyes widened as I mentioned his name.
